Explore hormone therapyHot flashes, 3 a.m. wake-ups, brain fog, weight that won't move, a body that suddenly feels unfamiliar. These are signs of shifting hormones, and they're treatable. And no, starting hormone therapy is not the cancer sentence you may have been warned about.
If you've heard that hormones cause cancer, heart attacks or dementia, you're not alone. Most of it traces back to 2002. Here's what's happened since.
The Women's Health Initiative headlines. A large trial of an older oral estrogen plus a synthetic progestin was stopped early, and the news reported "HRT causes breast cancer." Prescriptions fell sharply almost overnight.[1]
A closer look at who was studied. Participants averaged 63 years old, often a decade or more past menopause. Later analyses found that age, timing and hormone type change the picture.
20-year follow-up. Women in the WHI who took estrogen alone had lower breast cancer rates than women on placebo.[2]
The Menopause Society position. For healthy women under 60, or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of hormone therapy generally outweigh the risks for treating symptoms and preventing bone loss.[3]
The FDA removes the "black box." The FDA announced it would remove the broad boxed warnings about heart disease, breast cancer and dementia from menopausal hormone therapy labels.[4]

Read Anna's storyFor most healthy women who start hormone therapy before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the change in breast cancer risk is small, and it depends on the type of hormones used. In the Women's Health Initiative, women who took estrogen alone (women without a uterus) had fewer breast cancers over long-term follow-up than women on placebo. The combination of estrogen with a synthetic progestin (medroxyprogesterone) showed a small increase, roughly 8 more cases per 10,000 women per year. Anna reviews your personal and family history and helps you weigh your own numbers before you decide.
Most of that fear traces back to the first Women's Health Initiative headlines in 2002. That study used older hormone formulas, and its participants averaged 63 years old, often many years past menopause. Later analyses showed that timing, age and hormone type matter a great deal. In November 2025 the FDA announced it would remove the broad "black box" warnings about heart disease, breast cancer and dementia from menopausal hormone therapy labels.
Yes. At You Aesthetics, a hormone panel is part of every intake. It usually includes estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid markers and DHEA, along with markers that help confirm the treatment is safe for you. In perimenopause, hormone levels swing day to day, so Anna reads your labs alongside your symptoms rather than treating a single number.
Yes, and many women do. The two address different parts of the problem: hormones address the symptoms and metabolic changes of menopause, and GLP-1s address appetite and blood sugar. Anna offers a 75-minute combo intake that builds both into one plan.
You Aesthetics is a cash-pay clinic with pay-as-you-go visits and no required membership. Many patients use HSA or FSA funds, and financing is available through PatientFi. Lab and pharmacy costs vary, and we're happy to walk you through them before you commit.
